Radon gas is a naturally occurring element found in ground water especially in well water throughout Colorado.  Extensive testing of residential well water over the last few years has shown that virtually all well water contains a detectable level of Radon and in many cases the level is quite high.  Since the World Health Organization considers Radon exposer in the home the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers it is important to have a effective solution to removing radon gas from a homes water supply.

There are two methods of removing radon from water.  One is through absorption using activated carbon.  If properly designed this method will remove 90% of the radon and over time will become radioactive which leads to disposal problems.  Because of this is is generally only suggested to use this method on lower levels of radon.

On water with higher levels of radon air stripping is considered a more acceptable method as the radon is not accumulated and up to 99.9% removal can be achieved.

There are many types of homemade and commercially available air stripping systems and their problems include: noisy operation, limited flow rates, regular cleaning and maintenance, complicated venting.

How the WPS Radon Striper Works:

Most commercially available radon strippers use a small chamber and blow a high volume of air through water as it flows through the chamber.  Although these strippers remove a high level of radon then have a limited flow and are very nosy as they use a high volume air blower.  Venting is also more cumbersome as the usually require 4” vent pipes reaching above roofline.  Radon is continuously vented throughout the day each time water is used so the risk of reentry into the home through a open window is higher.

The WPS Radon Stripper is completely different.  It utilizes a 175 gallon or larger water storage tank which is programed to fill with water twice a day.  Once during the night and once mid morning.  As the tank fills a quite (45db) air pump begins bubbling air through a special diffuser into the tank.  These tiny bubbles carry the radon out of the water and through a small vent outside.  Depending on the radon level in the water the bubbler is programed to bubble for 1-2 hours to reach a 99%+ removal.  The water is then re-pressurized with constant pressure pump to provide excellent water pressure to the house.
